"Christian Printup: The Man behind the Woman"
By Jill Diamond
WBC Female Boxing Committee
They say behind every good man is a woman. Well, in Christian Printup's case, the reverse is true. Christian has promoted more good women's fights then any promoter in the US. He is the star maker behind Jessica Rakoczy (WBC Lightweight World Champion) and Carina Moreno (WBC Strawweight World Champion) and now he's featuring them, and an NABF Female Super Lightweight fight on his next card.
It's not that he thinks that women will ever surpass men in boxing popularity, it's just that he knows good fighters and good business. He has never taken a loss featuring women. The fact that he continually mixes them in with his other programs is proof enough. That and the realization that they fill the Tachi Palace in Lemoore, California with appreciative crowds.
Last year, Christian was named the 2006 NABF Promoter of the Year for Female Boxing. One of his protégés, Carina Moreno, won the 2006 NABF Female Fighter of the year, as well as the WBAN Fighter of the month, a website that specializes in women's boxing.
Carina was a top amateur athlete who had a problem getting a fight before the Tachi took her in, and she,
and her trainer Rick Nobles are making the most of it. In one year, Carina went from NABF Lt Fly World Champion, to WBC World Champion. Now she's being honored at the Boxing Hall of Fame. Not bad for a boxer of either gender.
One hopes that other promoters learn from Christian's example. It's not about the women. It's about the matches. And his are the best. On his September 27th card, he features three women's title bouts. The house will be packed, the announcer will be Jimmy Lennon, the crowd will go wild. What else is there to know?
