| Star of the Month: Referee Curtis Thrasher |
|
Curtis Thrasher, our star referee, is a man of few words but exemplary actions; in the ring he´s beyond reproach. A good friend and a loyal member of the NABF, we thought you´d like to know a little more about him. Why boxing? Curtis: Always had an interest in combat sport, boxed in Alaska in the early 80's What is it about being a referee that attracts you?
Curtis: A great way to be active and stay involved with the sport. Any special moments you'd like to share?
Curtis: Just great times at conventions and nurturing boxing relationships.
Any difficult calls? How did you work through them?
Curtis: None really... ok well a few.
Do you think the seminars are useful?
Curtis:Yes, very much so to refresh and review is always good.
Do you think there should be an age limit or other qualifications not imposed?
Curtis:That's a tough call, but we would hope to know when enough is enough or one of our fellow officials would drop a hint.
What about a Federal commission?
Curtis:If done in a way that would not restrict the sanctioning bodies, and would provide uniform training.
How ia it working in countries other than USA?
Curtis:Great experience, working with different commisions abroad is always a great adventure... but when the bell rings it's still boxing.
Your life outside the ring?
Curtis:I have a wonderful wife of 23 years, I have great son 21 years old and a lovely daughter 17. I'm a General Foreman for an Outside Line Construction Company in Denver, Colorado.
Something you'd change about the sport?
Curtis: More public relations, our sport needs heros.
Advice to beginners?
Curtis: Spend time in the gym, choose good mentors.
