Boxing has no borders -- and we, the NABF, Mexican, American and Canadian are having a blast! June 9th The cocktail party brought friends from all over North America together in one of the most colorful places on earth. Afterward, everyone was free to go out and explore the exotic streets of New Orleans. Tom Ashy is our unofficial concierge, so there were a lot of great suggestions and fun things to consider.
June10th Our general session was opened by the Deputy Mayor of New Orleans. Then, Robert Lenhart, in his unique style, MC'd the session, Mauricio Sulaiman shared some wonderful personal stories of his time in New Orleans for the "No mas" fight, as well as encouraging news about the state of boxing in
Mexico. Ed Pearson was praised for bringing in more Canadian representatives to the NABF. The highlight, was our first tern-President Joe Dwyer's address. Despite the economy, we had more fights this year than in NABF history, including some in Germany, France and Algiers. Joe also led us in a moment of respectful recognizing for our beloved Roy VanPutten. And, we sent prayers and to Nick Charles for a strong recovery. We also are privileged to have four of our NABF champs- Irma Sanchez, Chauncy Welliver, Wilbert Uicab and Joe Hipp at the convention; as well as some top promoters. The afternoon judges seminar, led by Duane Ford, was well attended (in fact, standing room only), and the ratings meeting went smoothly with Claude Jackson at the helm. Tonight, is time to play and enjoy the music, friendship and food of an enchanting city. This is turning out to be a great convention in a wonderful setting. June11thThis morning's General Assembly was well represented, despite the amoount of good eating and frivolity the evening before. We covered suggestions as to where to hold next year's convention. Many people favored Mexico or places where the Mexican delgates could get to easily. We had already decided to do something about getting some help translating seminarsfor the Spanish speaking delegates. This year Benjamin and Monique Rendon were gracious our Ambassadors to the Latin members. Women's boxing, which took a strong hit during the economic turn down, is on the rise in the US again, and WBCares, is doing well; and activily solicitng recipes for our International Cookbook. Thanks went to Doris, Linda and Chris, who held down the front desk and Luis Escalona for his tireless efforts. Also, to Claude, our ratings mentor. Jay Nady held a very informative and spirited ref's seminar and Lee Peter's did a great job with the Supervisors. We especially thank Jimbo Stephenson for his demonstration of proper hand wrapping -- invaluable info for the Supervisors. The Award Dinner was a relaxed, southern buffet ending with a great auction of some special pieces put together by Crocker and Van Hoyt. Joe Dwyer gave a special thank you to Carlos Baeza, prolific photographer extrodinaire, and to the Rendons for all their help during the convention.
