Supervisor Tommy Ashy's report is as follows:
Judges and their scoring: Rafael Ramos 76-76 Kellie Yoh 73-79 -SEEGER Glen Crocker 75-77-SEEGER Referee: Ruben Carrion Challenger Victor Fonseca of Puerto Rico took on Champion Al Seeger of Georgia, USA this past Friday night with Fonseca coming out victorious via an TKO- at 1:41 of the 9th round. The early rounds set the tone for the fight as both fighters did a good deal of in-fighting resulting in a lot of holding and clutching. Fonseca got the better of it in the first four rounds on the inside and landing some effective hooks on the outside. Starting in the 5th Seeger was able to score more effectively with right hands to the head and body and as his punch rate went up Fonseca was caught between leading and countering. In the 8th round Fonseca hurt Seeger with aggressive attack a sharp short right and started to further bust up the face of Seeger. In the 9th Fonseca came out pressing the action and landed a left to the head and then one to the body of Seeger. As Seeger staggered Fonseca landed another big left that sent Seeger to the canvas. Referee Ruben Carrion quickly stopped the action at 1:41 of the round. NOTE: This was a competitive fight that did got rough at times, but I did not think was as dirty as some other ringside observers.. Seeger was put on a stretcher from the ring and taken to the hospital overnight for observation. I was initially told late Friday night that he was OK and the hospital trip was primarily precautionary. He was alert and conscious when I saw him in the ambulance behind the arena after the fight Friday night. I found out last evening that he was transferred to a hospital in San Antonio and that is where he is as of this writing, Monday afternoon.
NOTE: Seeger was thought to have a small bleed on his brain and was transferred to UTSA hospital in San Antonio. The bleeding had apparently stopped but Al had surgery to repair a fractured sinus on Monday after the fight. Hopefully he will come through this fine.
