| Karmazin vs. Echols: Report |
|
When I told friends I was doing a fight at the Playboy Mansion, they asked if it was a "pillow fight." Well, this was anything but. The Mansion is everything you imagined it to be. The boxing is a backdrop for a huge party. Hef was there, his blonds in tow.
The officials were, Lou Filipo, Marty Denkins and Raul Caiz. The Ref was Wayne Hedgpeth. A great group. And of course, Rudy was there. The fighters were kept in the back area, a good distance away from the event. They had tent dressing rooms, and given that it was a cold night, I would've preferred they head more heating lamps on the property. Other than that, things couldn't have run smoother. The arena's capacity is 1100 and four of the fights, one a Cabofe fight, were on Azteca America. The promoter of record, Steve Bash is great to work with. He's easy going, loves his fighters, and pays without being prompted. Our guys were the last fight. Joey D reminded me that's because it was an on-again-off-again deal. The fights began abut 6:20 PM. Our fight went on abut 11 PM. It was slated for ten rounds. It was a dangerous fight! Roman Karmazin was in great shape, a perfect 159 lbs. He had Freddie Roach and Michael Moore in his corner. Antuwn Echols, who was almost four pounds overweight, had Stevie Johnson and Stephen Perkins, and a great punch. Throughout the fight, Roman dominated, but given Antwun's courage and power, anything could've happened. After an unreturned fluffy of punches in the 3rd round, I was ready for Wayne or Antwun's corner to stop the fight; but in the fifth round, he dropped Roman. The seventh round told the full story, and Wayne called the fight 1+ minute in. At that point, Karmazin was leading on all three cards: 58 to 55. It was a treat sitting next to Dean Lohuis, who is a walking boxing thesaurus. He held 8 by 5 cards on every fighter, with information only their mother's knew - or maybe not! A special thanks to Chris, who sends you completed and accurate paperwork. You show up at the weigh in with confidence and ready to go! Our winner, and still NABF MW Champ remains, Roman Karmazin. I thank the Cowboy and the Cop for he opportunity.
